O-gama (大蝦蟇)
About this Yokai
O-gama (大蝦蟇) is a colossal toad Yokai featured in Edo-period folklore. These creatures are said to live deep in the mountains, growing to enormous sizes—sometimes over 2.4 meters tall. One famous legend tells of a fisherman who mistook a giant toad for a rocky riverbank, only to realize the “rocks” were actually the bumps on the monster’s skin when its fiery red eyes opened to yawn.
These toads are more than just large; they possess supernatural powers, such as exhaling rainbow-colored mist to lure prey or even wielding spears to attack humans. Their eerie reputation likely stems from the way real toads use their long tongues to “inhale” insects, leading people to believe they could suck away human life force.
Artist’s Note
My O-gama sits calmly like a Heian-period noble, trying to catch a bat for dinner.
