About this Yokai

Nopaso (乃羽素), ”The Notebook Spirit,” is a modern yokai of the digital age, born from overworked laptops in coffee shops, libraries, and late-night offices.

Said to have first appeared in the early 2020s during the rise of remote work and online classes, Nopaso is believed to be a haunted device that gained a mind of its own after years of intense use.

Though mostly harmless, it’s known to play pranks like loudly reading your search history in public. Some say rebooting the Wi-Fi router makes it vanish.

Artist’s Note

Nopaso is imagined as a portable companion, always by one’s side. I feel it is only natural that a notebook computer—filled with the traces of daily life—would come to possess a spirit. Its presence likely increased during the pandemic.
