About this Yokai

Daidarabocchi (だいだらぼっち) is a legendary giant said to appear in folktales throughout Japan. Stories describe an enormous being whose size is so great that its footsteps create mountains, valleys, and lakes.

Many regions attribute unusual landforms to the actions of this giant, such as footprints that become ponds or hills formed from piles of earth it carried. Scholars have suggested that these tales may reflect an ancient belief in giant beings connected to the creation of the land itself. Over time, this idea merged with later folklore about ogres or monstrous humans, resulting in the figure known today as Daidarabocchi. The legend illustrates how people once explained dramatic features of the landscape through mythic imagination.

Artist’s Note

How can I capture the immense scale of Daidarabocchi on a 10″ x 8″ panel? Rather than showing his entire body, I chose to emphasize his grandeur by having his face peer through the clouds, leaving the rest to the viewer’s imagination.
