About this Yokai

Bakeneko (化け猫). Cats were long regarded as uncanny animals because of their glowing eyes at night, silent movements, and unpredictable behavior. Stories tell of Bakeneko transforming into humans and speaking human language. Some legends describe them possessing people, manipulating the dead, or seeking revenge against cruel humans. In Edo-period cities, as daily life moved further from nature, such strange qualities of household animals became the source of many supernatural tales. The image of the Bakeneko reflects both fascination and unease toward an animal that lives closely with humans yet seems to retain a wild, unknowable nature.

Artist’s Note

As a huge cat lover, I often imagine how wonderful it would be to cuddle a giant, fluffy cat like this. This piece was modeled after my own cat, and I wanted to capture her charm.
